How to Talk to Your Child About a Tricky Day (Without a Big Chat)
29 September 2026 · Lotty Coy
When something went wrong in your child's day — a friendship wobble, a cross moment, a disappointment — the instinct is to talk it through properly. But bedtime isn't the moment for a big debrief. Tired children need small questions, kindly asked.
Try these three, in order: “Was anything a bit tricky today?” then “How did that make you feel inside?” and finally “What might you do differently next time, or how do you wish it had gone?” That last one is the magic question. It hands the pen to your child and lets them rewrite the ending.
Once they've imagined a different ending, a story can carry it the rest of the way. In Once Upon Today, that wish becomes part of the tale — the bunny who finds the words, the otter who asks for a turn. Hearing their own better ending played out gently helps the feeling settle, so it doesn't follow them into sleep.
You don't need to fix the day. You just need to help your child close it kindly.
